Plain and simple, the innovation gap is widening.
Over the past 20 years, Agile methodologies have helped organizations respond to change over following a plan with both speed and flexibility. But as the growth speed of artificial intelligence increases, many organizations are finding themselves outmatched.
According to McKinsey, leading companies that successfully scale AI across their operations are realizing cost savings and revenue increases that are 20–30% higher than those of their peers.¹ Yet IBM reports that only 15% of enterprises have truly embedded AI into their workflows at scale.² This speaks to a growing innovation gap—one that Agile alone may no longer be equipped to close.
Agile Is Built for Speed—But AI Demands Exponential Velocity
It goes without saying that properly implemented Agile excels in environments of incremental change, human feedback, and product iteration. But AI introduces fundamentally different dynamics:
- 𝗨͟𝗻͟𝗽͟𝗿͟𝗲͟𝗱͟𝗶͟𝗰͟𝘁͟𝗮͟𝗯͟𝗹͟𝗲͟ ͟𝗺͟𝗼͟𝗱͟𝗲͟𝗹͟ ͟𝗯͟𝗲͟𝗵͟𝗮͟𝘃͟𝗶͟𝗼͟𝗿͟: AI systems continuously evolve as they are retrained.
- 𝗛͟𝘆͟𝗽͟𝗲͟𝗿͟-͟𝗳͟𝗮͟𝘀͟𝘁͟ ͟𝗶͟𝘁͟𝗲͟𝗿͟𝗮͟𝘁͟𝗶͟𝗼͟𝗻͟ ͟𝗰͟𝘆͟𝗰͟𝗹͟𝗲͟𝘀͟: Platforms like Google Cloud’s Vertex AI can complete model training workflows in minutes or hours, allowing rapid experimentation beyond traditional sprint timelines.³
- 𝗖͟𝗿͟𝗼͟𝘀͟𝘀͟-͟𝗳͟𝘂͟𝗻͟𝗰͟𝘁͟𝗶͟𝗼͟𝗻͟𝗮͟𝗹͟ ͟𝗰͟𝗼͟𝗺͟𝗽͟𝗹͟𝗲͟𝘅͟𝗶͟𝘁͟𝘆͟: Effective AI development requires coordination between data scientists, engineers, designers, legal teams, and ethicists.⁴
- 𝗨͟𝗻͟𝗰͟𝗹͟𝗲͟𝗮͟𝗿͟ ͟𝗽͟𝗿͟𝗼͟𝗱͟𝘂͟𝗰͟𝘁͟ ͟𝗯͟𝗼͟𝘂͟𝗻͟𝗱͟𝗮͟𝗿͟𝗶͟𝗲͟𝘀͟: AI-powered tools often evolve into platforms, making scoping and planning more ambiguous.
This new terrain demands more than agility—it requires something I’ve seen called AI-gility. Read On….
What Is AI-gile?

How to Make the Leap to AI-gile
1. Rethink Team Structure
AI demands multi-disciplinary teams. Harvard Business Review notes that “a successful AI transformation requires integration across multiple capabilities—data, technology, domain expertise, and change management.”⁴ Co-creation is critical.
2. Build for Transparency and Accountability
Gartner predicts that by 2026, 60% of large enterprises will require AI model operationalization and documentation processes to ensure auditability.⁵ This makes transparency, bias tracking, and explainability non-negotiable elements of your product backlog.
3. Evolve Team Roles In an AI-gile environment:
- Product Owners must become not just feature prioritizers but curators of behavior.
- Scrum Masters should guide conversations around how the team works and evolves their work approach over time. Not just track how fast they’re going.
4. Invest in AI Literacy
Companies that prioritize organization-wide AI education (think internal workshops and real-world use cases) will adapt faster and with fewer hiccups.
5. Anchor to Business Outcomes.
Let’s focus on more than the usual metrics like velocity charts or burnup/burndown reports. They aren’t sufficient for AI. A better thought is alignment around measurable outcomes like reduction in manual effort, decision confidence scores, or business KPIs; all informed by predictive models.

It’s always been about adapting to change. But AI changes things faster than we mere humans can keep up. To lead in the future of work, it’s important that organizations evolve beyond frameworks and morph into adaptive intelligence.
Again, AI-gile is not a replacement—I see it as more of an advancement. It doesn’t reject Agile values or the manifesto, it accelerates them for a machine-driven future. The next frontier of digital transformation will be driven by those who not only know how to create AI, but also how to collaborate with it.
